Great message from Bono about Jesus and the poor

This is a live and edited clip from the Elevation tour with scripture references on the video for “40″ and “Where The Streets Have No Name” and at about 1 minute from the end of this video there is a clip of Bono speaking at the US National Prayer Breakfast 2006.

His quotes at the end are this

If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you. – Lev 25:35
and this

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come. – Luke 4:18-19

Bono also mentions the Jubilee year. A very un-capitalist concept where everyone’s debts are forgiven each 7 years. If I owned land and I lost it somehow, in that year my land is returned to me. Lev 25:1-7, Deut 15:1-11, Ex 23:10-11

Only an incredibly loving, kind, fair and generous God would dream up such a wonderful system to ensure equality returns each 7 years. This is one of the reasons I love being a Christian.

Maybe Bono has unresolved issues in his life. Maybe you do too. I definitely do. But at least he is out there doing something to help the poor and unprivileged.

Yes he is rich, but maybe he has been blessed by God. We’ll only know when we get to heaven.

But for now… he’s doing something with what he has got… and I say GOOD ON HIM.
