With the measure you use, it will be measured to you

"Consider carefully what you hear," he continued. "With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more." – Mark 4:24

Look again at "With the measure you use, it will be measured to you—and even more" how cool is it that we will get "even more".

I don't know about you, but this is confusing to me! He says He will give us the measure that we measure with. Could it be that you get what you ask for?!

So I did a bit more research at biblegateway.com on those passages and in several versions alongside each other.

The AMP puts v24 this way:

And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you–and more [besides] will be given to you who hear. – Mark 4:24

Wow. That kinda explains a lot. I still think though that going to bible college is not going to turn us into a "Jesus" who has a great relationship with God. So there is more to it than just learning.

So what is it then? Those words (thought and study) were added by the editors of the AMP – it's not implicit in the original language. Read A note about the AMP. So if the study of His Words isn't the key, but the measure is (somehow) the key… then what should we do?

I am writing this because I assume you (like me) want to go on with God to be all you can be. I'm assuming you want to be like Him, walk on water, heal people, cast out demons and raise the dead – right?

So… there is something (other than study) that makes us like Him. It's something we put in and it influences the measure of what we get back. I suggest to you that what you ASK him for is what you will GET – but be sure to ask with the right motivation.

What does He consider the right motivation? Love. If you ask for something for someone who needs it (loving others) He will respond to that request.

If you want more revelation about Him, His ways, His Kingdom – then ask for more revelation! (Remember to Test everything and hold on to the good).

  1. I think this verse is a warning and a promise. We are told that we will be judged in the same measure that we judge others. This is a warning not to judge others. Yet also a promise that if we give, it will come back to us. So what are you giving other people – do you give them judgement and condemnation or do you give them love, mercy, joy? I don’t agree with the comment – “You get what you ask for”, but I do feel there is a godly principle of reaping what you sow.
