Why did Jesus base Himself in Galilee?

GalileeWhy did Jesus start His ministry in the Galilee? In terms of Jewishness and Jewish believers and faith in God, this area was a backwater. If Jesus wanted to have people around Him who knew the Torah and were believers, He would have based Himself in Jerusalem. But He chose Galilee.

Is it because He knew that what God wants is to reach the unsaved – so where better to start His ministry than in amongst unbelievers?

Is it because Tiberias (in the Galilee) was on the trading route between Europe and Asia and that news would spread far and wide? That’s pretty strategic!

My intention is to provoke thought, to encourage you to dig deeper into God’s intention. When you come up with an answer to these questions, you may have a deeper understanding not only of what God intended for Jesus, but also what God intends for you. Everyone is different and He treats each of us differently. Diversity is important.

UPDATE: 19 June 2014

Since I wrote this post two things have become clearer to me

1) Jesus didn’t start His ministry in Galilee. His MOTHER started His ministry there. She wanted Him to make wine. He said “what does this have to do with Me? My time hasn’t come yet”. But she persisted and He made the wine.

2) I was wrong to ask why He based Himself there. It wasn’t His base. Have a look at: Map of Jesus’ ministry travels in Israel. In there you can see that He moved frequently. IF ANYTHING He based Himself in Bethany.

God bless you!
Mark.

  1. jesus started in Galilee because ,galilee was full of nonbelievers so jesus wanted the to spread the gospel through out the world.there was no need to start in jerusalem because he knew that his ministry was going to end in jerusalem.that is why he started in Galilee
