How do we love others – a parable of the church body

The Great Commandment was described in great details by Jesus in John 14-17. He said that if we keep His command, then here are some of the things that would happen:

  • He and the Father will come and make their abode with us
  • We will remain in Him and He in us
  • He will send the Holy Spirit to us
  • Anything we ask in His name will be done

He promised SO MANY wonderful things and they are all contingent on us keeping His command. That's what it says: "IF you keep my command THEN…".

So what is His command? Love. He says it over and over in many ways:

  • To love one another as I have loved you
  • I give you a new commandment, to love your neighbour as you love yourself

So let me ask a few Christians what they think loving others means:

Hi, Mr. Evangelist,

What do you think is the most important way to show God's love to people?
"To go into all the world and get them saved and get them into His Kingdom!" 🙂
That's wonderful Mr. Evangelist – go for it, go and love people!

Hi, Mrs. Prophet,

What do you think is the most important way to show God's love to people?
"To tell them what God's will and vision is for them, to give them God's words for their lives!" 🙂
That's wonderful Mrs. Prophet – go for it, go and love people!

Hi, Mr. Teacher,

What do you think is the most important way to show God's love to people?
"Teach them about Jesus, about His life, about His ways and help them get closer to Him!" 🙂
That's wonderful Mr. Teacher – go for it, go and love people!

Hi, Mrs. Pastor,

What do you think is the most important way to show God's love to people?
"Bring the people into a loving and healing relationship with each other" 🙂
That's wonderful Mrs. Pastor – go for it, go and love people!

Are you getting it? Do you see? THIS is how the church is a body where each part has it's role to play. Not all people are evangelists, not all are pastors. Together we are a body with Jesus as the head. Cool.

That's why He made the great commandment: love! That's why He said to Peter over and over and over just before He rose up from the mount of olives, "Peter feed my sheep". It's all about love.

So here is my question to you: how do you show love? It could be in so many ways. Perhaps you welcome people into your home and feed them? Perhaps you reach out through a food trailer? Perhaps you play music at church? Perhaps you welcome at the door? Perhaps you go on missions? Perhaps you provide the finances for church or for missions or for a food trailer?

How do you show love? It does not have to be the same way as anyone else does. God says that He puts the desires of our heart within us. What small (or big) desire has He put within you? 😀

  2. Excellent post. I think you have hit the nail on the head with love being the umbrella under which all the gifts, ministries within the Body of Christ should operate. Without love we are nothing and accomplish nothing in the Kingdom.
