God has a plan to prosper you (Jer 9:11) what to do while you wait

Many of us who are trying to do the right thing, trying to love, trying to be like Him will be finding the going is hard. We hold onto Him tight.

We might even get into the whole “forsaking self” rubbish theology and we end up learning about a very harmful and damaging “theology of suffering”.

But Jesus came to give you life abundantly and He wants you to live your life, the life He gave you. So many Christians in desperate times hold onto scripture such as this one… but they end up holding on and on and on forever.

Let’s look at this scripture and then see the context of the scripture.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. – Jeremiah 29:11

These are fabulous words.

The bit we often miss

Now look at the promises in the next verses:

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” – Jeremiah 29:12-14

“Yay Lord!” I hear us all cry. Verses 11-14 are just the tonic we need. But did you see verse 10 – it’s going to take a while to happen.

This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.

Ouch. 70 years? The promise is wonderful, but it will only be fulfilled in 70 years time?

What should we do while we wait?

What are we meant to do for those 70 years?! The answer is to be found in verses 4 to 9

This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.

Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” – Jeremiah 29:4-7

So what now for you?

So while you wait for your promises, here are EXAMPLE of what you could be doing:

  1. Build houses
  2. Settle down
  3. Plant gardens and eat what they produce
  4. Marry and have sons and daughters;
  5. Then find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage
  6. Seek the peace and prosperity of the city in which you live

If you ever needed to see what God says you should be doing while you’re waiting for your destiny, there it is.

Now, in reality we might not be able to afford houses. Finding a suitable partner can take you until you’re 30+ in modern society. So we can’t take those commands literally.

So what will YOU do while YOU wait? It’s got to be something that works for YOU in YOUR life.

The bottom line

Enjoy your life that He gave you!

He will gradually change you and use you in small ways and then bigger ways and eventually before you know it, then 70 years are up, you’ve increased (not decreased) in health and strength and numbers… and you’re ready for your destiny in Him.

  1. I was sexually, mentally, emotionally and verbally abused by my grandfather as far back as I can remember. He did many terrible things, some of which are too distasteful for me to talk about publicly. I want to share my testimony, because so many people have been hurt, and they need to realize that someone has made it through their struggles so they can have hope. More than anything, I want you to know and really understand that anyone who has been abused can fully recover if they will give their life completely to the Lord…It may seem impossible, but God’s truth has set me free from a life of pretense and lies and has restored my soul. I am living proof that nothing is too hard for God. No matter what you’ve been through or how bad you’ve been hurt, there is hope!

  5. “theology of suffering”. you mean the “theology that Jesus followed, or the TBN Christian cult leaders that you followed. I like your support this ministry link, but we have to many cult leaders now making money off the False gospel on TBN. Maybe you should try giving to the poor, and preaching the cross, the gospel of Christ and God will bless you with real blessings. we who have Christ “desire” to submit our all unto the Father, So God can take possession of you and lead us to the higher calling.

  6. Having issues with my husband but met someone from my past that I have reconnected with. Starting to have feelings for this person and we both are christians and not sure what to do.

    • Hi Loree

I don’t know you personally, so I don’t know your situation. The basic guideline is that you should move away from any other temptation and work things out with your husband. That’s the bottom line. One man, one woman.

However. Stating the law is easy, but life is never that simple.

Jesus taught us that the law is made for man, and man is not made for the law. In other words, we don’t have to obey law and remain in abusive relationships or where the marriage covenant is broken and it cannot be restored through forgiveness.

So I suggest you move away from this other person for a moment, focus on your marriage, and talk to a Christian counselor at a church and PRAY and see what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.

If you ARE in an unhealthy marriage where the covenant is broken, it is still very unlikely that you should become involved with anyone else until you have become divorced and yo

God bless you as you go through this time.

  8. Forgive my typos, I’m using swype on my android phone. I meant god strives for our good, always. He proved this by dying on the cross so that we could receive ever inheritance that only Christ truly deserves.

    Blessings.

  9. Commenting on one of the comments. I thought this was a nice post that helps us remember that God strives for our god, always. We don’t always see it when we are in a period of waiting, but when the wait is over, we will see out, and know we wouldn’t have wanted our life any other way.

Regarding the old testament, Peter said that ALL SCRIPTURE is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, correction, instruction in righteousness, etc. paul also says thee old testament stories were written for our sake. Near the end of the book of Luke, on the road to Emmaus, Jesus preaches to the men all the things concerning Himself in the scriptures, from the old testament (the law and the prophets). Yes there are contexts in the old testament but there its always a lesson about christ and a lesson for us today in the ot. For it was written for our sake, says the apostle paul.

    • Yes, it’s all useful for teaching. It’s all useful. Agreed. But it’s Jesus Christ on the cross that sets us free. See Jesus Christ’s words…

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. John 5:39-40

The scriptures themselves do not give eternal life. Jesus Christ on the cross and resurrected gives eternal life. That is why I value scripture about Jesus Christ on the cross and resurrected as of far greater value.

And also remember that Paul said that when the Jews read the books of Moses, a veil forms over their eyes. That is why I avoid the books of the law.

      God bless you,
      Mark.

    • we are told scripture is good and prifitable, etc. but the OT they had also had the deuterocanonical books. Jesus referenced them even in his teachings, as well as another book which no longer even exists.
Let’s remember the great commission was not to form a book of books (which is the literal meaning of the word BIBLE). While it is inspired and authoritative Jesus never asked it to be written for us. The first new testament book to be written was Thessalonians, and in 2 Thess 2:15 we are given this:
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings[a] we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
‘word of mouth’ is all they had in the first few centuries, plus whatever epistles (like Thess) they could get scribes to copy for them. Each church had different scriptural resources until a formal BIBLE was commissioned to be put together in 382.

      • Do a search for the words “great commission” and you will not find them in any bible. That is a human invention.

But you will find “the great command” and it’s mentioned so many times in the NT and also in the OT too.

In the NT Paul said “I am writing to you” and “see how big my writing is”. It wasn’t word of mouth, it was his letters.

        God bless you,
        Mark.

  10. Thank you so much for this entry. I found it tonight while searching for inspiration and encouragement about my prayer situation. I think I was supposed to find it. In short, we made a major move 18 mths ago in an attempt to live a slower-paced lifestyle in the country with more family time; however, it hasn’t worked out. We’ve still made no friends, my husband’s job (already almost an hour away one-way) is moving further away, the few family members here are too busy for us, and we’re lonely. (I work from home full-time, caring for my special needs son and other children.) We’ve decided to move back to our old home state, and now our home here has no bites in three months. While that’s not a ‘long’ time, we feel stuck here. I’ve planted gardens, we eat from them, my son’s found his fiance here, yet we want to go home. My husband is much more positive than me; he feels we’ll move on His plan and timing, but as a lonely holiday season looms, I wonder daily why prayers for friends, family time, social involvement and the sale of our home feel unanswered. Your entry feels so literal to me, and I realize I’ve not done the last step: pray for my city. It feels so foreign here, we don’t feel included or wanted here, and my many attempts to become involved are rebuffed as we’re not from this small town. I feel like we’re not prospering and instead we’re paying for the mistake of moving here; 70 years is too long to wait and I keep trying to ‘do’ the right things here in the meantime. I will start praying for my city; if it prospers, maybe more buyers will arrive and one will want to buy our home. I feel like life is on hold and nothing that we want (a new career awaiting upon my move, a feeling of belonging, the chance to start over and move forward, living rather than existing) is happening. I will return to your blog as I need the direction and reading His Word is something I need to do more of. Thank you.

  11. I am so thankful I came across your site. I am truly blessed reading your posts. All my life, the Lord has love me with an everlasting love. Despite all that I have been through, He has always been faithful, loving and very very patient with me. Thank you Mark for your posts. God bless you always!

  12. Great advice thank you! Jeremiah 29:11 is one of my favorites 🙂 Keep preaching the word. God Bless 🙂

  13. This is very true. God has a plan for each of us, but we must be patient and wait for Him. It is when we decided to do things on our own that we fail. Proverb 16:3 says Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

    Great post
    God bless!

    • You are most welcome. But let me add… just incase some people are unsure of what I meant… we are not to simply “wait”. That’s why the title to this post says “what to DO while you wait”.

Passivity is not a part of the bible message. We can’t see passivity in any of the lives of the great people in the bible.

What we need to do while we wait is love and share what we have with others and visit people in jail and help the poor and pray for our leaders and the city we live in – because if it goes well with them it will go well with us.

And yes, when God’s plan comes to pass for our lives, we will have been doing these things all along and we will be in a very good place, well connected, loved, protected, blessed, favoured etc.

Thanks again for commenting and for taking the time to share your encouragement.

      God bless you, Mark.

  14. Thank you so much. These days I have been asking God what his plan for me . And then the answer come

  15. Good things can also arise from the ‘theology of suffering’ you negate here. Look at Mother Teresa and others who have sacrificed what most would not in order to bring Christ’s love and compassion to others.

    • Mother Teresa… take a moment to read this book about her “Come be my light”. What an amazing set of letters to her superiors and from them to her.

But the fact remains, we are to live life abundantly.

  17. I wonder the reason I cannot start a new relationship is because I cannot forget the past, or is it because I have not met the right person..
Currently there’s an annoying guy, a crazy guy who seems to refuse to be my friend just wants to be my “boyfriend”.. he refused to communicate with me.. because I had declined him 2 times.. My feeling for this guy is not exactly strong, I mean I like him..but it seems like he appeared after I prayed with all my heart.. I guess for one thing he showed me I am still worth loving.. maybe he appeared to show me that I’m still worth loving..

  18. This is an incredible website.. I’m going through a phase in my life where I feel very empty everyday.. I’m an office girl doing work that would be interesting to most.. it’s not that this is not interesting for me, my main goal is to become an actress.. I’ve had some opportunities and I prayed along the way..I really feel that God gives me power, and takes me to places that I’ve never been.. now that I have to learn how to trust again.. and forgive the past..
Romantically speaking I’m still in ruins.. I am kind of scared to start a relationship with man again..I’ve loved a man so much in the past and it crumbled.. I felt very worthless and hurt afterwards..it’s been two years, and it was not his fault.. I’ve met many guys after but none of them had come close..it is hard to describe but I feel like I’ll never be able to love again.. this emptiness.. I do pray though for love, and I will try hard to recognize when one comes..

    • Hi Mandi

Thanks for visiting this site and thank you for your encouragement. I hear you saying that you are somewhat stuck and that you want other things, different things. May I challenge you to do something that I think will help you realise what is important to you and help you reach some of your goal in life?

I challenge you to be disciplined enough to print this list of your personal bill of rights https://achristian.wordpress.com/2009/04/10/your-personal-bill-of-rights/ and stick it up on your room wall. Look at it every day. Take note of it. Choose one to focus on each day.

I’m willing to be that each one might challenge you. You might even feel angry as you read them and realise what you didn’t have in your life before. But today is a new day! So is tomorrow.

And this next suggestion is that you start saying NO to the WRONG people and start saying YES to the RIGHT people. Just doing this will change your life. You may have less friends, but they are better for you and drain you less. Did you see that “YES” movie by Jim Carey? He started to say yes to things. In your case, I also suggest you say NO to things that hurt you, or steal from you… but also say YES to things that you’d like to try but perhaps someone told you that you couldn’t?!

I humbly suggest that now is not a good time to get into a relationship with a man who won’t first be your friend. And ASSUMING that you have met with him and have talked to him about this issue… then if he doesn’t want to communicate with you… then that is a sure sign that having a closer relationship will create EVEN MORE problems than you already have. How can you be close to someone who won’t talk to you. Once again let me say this… men are not mind readers. He could be shy, he could have other things on his mind… so make sure you meet up and talk about what is going on. But then if he still won’t be friends, won’t talk, then you are better off not getting close to him.

And keep praying. Keep asking Jesus Christ to send the help that you need. He will.

      God bless you!
      Mark.

  19. Prosperity in this sense, doesn’t necessarily mean money for those that believe this is the prosperity message. A person that moved out of their parents home into an apartment of their own is prosperous as are so many other people in other situations. It doesn’t necessarily mean being rich. Now, there are some churches that teach a prosperity message in terms of wealth, but the bible doesn’t teach in those terms.

    • I agree that prosperity includes SO MUCH MORE than money. There is no doubt about it.

But it also does include money. Jesus Christ suffered and endured poverty SO THAT we don’t have to. Consider what it means to have an inheritance… from the world’s RICHEST God.

  20. “God has a plan to prosper you… what to do while you wait”

I love this 🙂 God plan for us is to prosper 🙂 He will pour out all the blessings that no room to be filled. 🙂

    Thanks Papa God!

  21. I just want to say thanks for taking the time out and digging deep in the Bible and explaining things that i can understand and pass on to other’s. Yes I get out my Bible and follow alone with you. Forgive me for my spelling

  22. You CANNOT open the Bible to a random page, read a promise and assume that it APPLIES TO YOU. Jeremiah 29 is OBVIOUSLY intended for a SPECIFIC group of people at a SPECIFIC time. So are almost all of the promises of prosperity, almost all of them in the OLD TESTAMENT under the OLD COVENANT WHICH HAS BEEN REPLACED. A Christian’s life SHOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE AND PROSPEROUS. There is no Biblical basis for this absolutely repulsive, disgusting heresy. I pray that you “Christians” will read what Jesus and Paul and Peter plainly taught to Christians and start to live it out – if you do, you will find JOY greater than what you’ve ever experienced in your delusion that God wants you to be prosperous on Earth. JUST READ WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT RICH PEOPLE! God bless you. =D

    • God is the same today as He was in the old testament days. It’s ludicrous to think that God wants us to suffer 24/7 with no prosperity whatsoever. Perhaps you are confusing prosperity with being rich. Nobody is talking about being rich. The bottom line here is written by God in Mathew 6:33. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” The “things” God is talking about here are what is mentioned in the preceding verses- your life, what you should eat and drink, and what you should wear. Don’t you believe that if you have these things you are prosperous? Of course! This says nothing of being rich. You refer to the bible talking about “rich people.” Jesus says that it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. Why? Because the rich man’s security is in his riches. He doesn’t need God, nor will he find the need to seek Him. Jeremiah says in 11:13 “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” this parallels beautifully the verse in Mathew 6:33. The point here is that if we seek the Lord above all else and with our whole heart, He will then and only then bless and prosper us. This is our reward for serving Him and diligently seeking Him. Will we have a permanent life of comfort? No, because part of our spiritual experience is suffering for the cause of Christ. Just as prosperity and comfort are not a permanent fixture in the living room of life, neither is suffering. Wonderfully enough, both bring about God’s rich blessings! Blessings on your life and may God show you true prosperity!

      • Hi Glenn

Thanks for sharing. I think you and I agree bro.

The point of this post has nothing to do with whether God wants us to be rich or not. The point of the post is that while WAITING for God’s promise to happen in your life… GET ON WITH LIVING.

This post is not about anything else. Im sorry if one or two sentences here or there confused the issue.

        God bless you bro, Mark.

  23. David,
I think the “prosperity gospel” and the “theology of suffering” can both be completely misguided if they are taken as absolutes and as contrasting. I believe a much more scriptural way of considering our lives on this earth is a balance of both the prosperity gospel and the theology of suffering. Yes, Jesus himself warns several times that we will suffer in this life. We will even suffer more because we are followers of Christ. (John 15:18-21- The world will hate and persecute us.)

But I also believe that most of what Mark is saying is true. God wants to richly bless us, and wants us to have life to the fullest. The Bible is full of vivid language describing how God desires us to have contentment and be blessed in this world. Following Jesus’ warning about how the disciples would suffer, Jesus promised that the Father would also bless them. (John 16:23-24- Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete.) See also the verses Mark quoted.

Our ultimate goal should not be to seek earthly prosperity, but we should acknowledge and be grateful for the rich physical blessings that God does bestow on us. We should try to be like Solomon: when God offered Solomon to make a request, he asked for wisdom to discern God’s will. Because Solomon’s focus was on obeying God, God also blessed him with riches and power. Then we should also be like Job, ready and willing to praise God even if we lose all our earthly blessings and even when we are facing extreme suffering.

Our lives are neither completely full of prosperity nor completely marred by suffering. We go through this life with a measure of both blessing and suffering, but our ultimate joy is in knowing that we will finally be blessed with eternal prosperity in heaven.

  25. This is the “Prosperity Gospel.” It is one of the biggest heresies in Christianity today. Jesus says we will physically SUFFER for being a believer!!!!! But we will not suffer spiritually for the Holy Spirit resides in us. I think John Piper articulates this sermon against this heresy very well……

    • Prosperity gospel is not about putting God above material things, but instead believing that God can and will bless those who follow and love him with all their own heart.

  28. I’ve always held on tightly to Jeremiah 29:11. It has been my security blanket for years when it comes to scripture. As of late, I’ve wondered about the God has to prosper me. Majority of my experiences have not been of prosperity and hope, but of pain and hurt. I said to the Lord, “Where is the plan? What plan?” I looked to the hills for help and all I see is harm. Now, I have a better understanding. I should have been looking at the verses that come before and after verse 11. I guess you could say I had tunnel vision.

i don’t really know why i’m telling you this, but i’m pretty sure you’d be blessed to know that you bless me. 🙂

I knew what I wanted to say to him, but I didn’t know quite how without sounding preachy. Thank you for this blog. I believe this is my answered prayer for my son. Our God is an awesome God!

  33. This spoke to me powerfully today! God sent me to a small city that everyone considers very economically depressed. I’ve even spoken those words since I’ve lived here. Today I had to reverse the words and feelings released against my city, to bring God’s alignment of good here. This was great revelation to me, that God can bring prosperity anywhere I am.
Thank you so greatly for sharing this scripture and your input about it. Praise God!

  35. Thanks for the nice posting. I recently was asked to work away from my home base (7 min from my home), to another worksite 2.5 hrs from my home, so a manager could come in and help straighten out some stuff that had been going on for years before I arrived. The place I am sent to is a nice worksite…stable, friendly, etc. Being a man, I could easily work there, settle down, and develop friendships. The trouble is the town is small, and doesn’t have what my wife likes for out children (3 girls and we home school…ballet, dance, gymn., swimming and a strong homeschool assoc.). It is also East Texas, and my wife is black and concerned about developing friends. Can you help me see how my situation applies to this passage?

Hi Robert. I can see that you’re looking at this objectively and you don’t see any way. I suggest you simply ask God for friends and I know from my own experience that He provides. It is my personal experience that when we trust in Him and rely on Him, He *makes* a way where there really didn’t seem to be any way. God bless you! Mark.

  37. There are 3 things required to come out of land of captivity 1 we must be willing to except the things we cannot change mostly our past but some things God places before us to prove our trust in him. 2 we must have the faith or courage to change the things we can or belief with accompaning action to change the things in us or our circumstances. 3 we must seek God daily to gain the wisdom to know wether to accept or change something.
