We certainly filled the earth – and now we’ve over-filled it and it’s collapsing.
One of the report’s editors, Jonathan Loh from the Zoological Society of London, said: “[It] is a stark indication of the rapid and ongoing loss of biodiversity worldwide. “Populations of species in terrestrial, marine and freshwater ecosystems have declined by more than 30% since 1970,” he added. “In the tropics the declines are even more dramatic, as natural resources are being intensively exploited for human use.” – Global ecosystems ‘face collapse’
Last week I met with a friend who just couldn’t see that we (Christians) have completely failed in our role as curators of this wonderful gift – the world – that God has given us. Instead my friend preferred to divert the conversation or blame it on the end times. I was speechless. Mostly. hehehe.
And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth. – Genesis 1:28
Have we done this? Did we take care of the earth? Or did we just expand and expand and give no thought to the future.
The problem in my view is simply: love of money… or in a single word: greed. Capitalism entirely focuses around greed. Listen to Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street back in 1987.
And if you look at the comments for that YouTube video you’ll see these two:
- He is so right… greed is the driving force in survival. I am proud to say I am greedy!
- Greatest unintentional hero ever…
The thing is, Gordon Gekko is identifying the exact logic of capitalism. The logic is that “the market” will sort out the ecology when the shortage becomes acute enough then there is money to be made in a shortage and the market will figure out how to solve the problem BECAUSE there is money to be made in it.
In this way greed for profits is the driving force across it will be the stabilizing and controlling factor. As Gordon Gekko says right at the end of that clip: “Greed clarifies, cuts through and clarifies the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed has marked the upward surge of mankind” and he says greed will save the U.S. (or if the movie was made these days… the earth).
These words come straight from hell. Hell wrote this movie to give good PR for itself. It’s saying “join in! come along! it’s the way of the world – so don’t be shy?” and leading us further and further away from God’s heart.
The bible says that love of money (greed) is the root of all evil.
For the love of money is a root of all evils; it is through this craving that some have been led astray and have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves through with many acute [mental] pangs. – 1 Timothy 6:10
We’re about to pay dearly for not keeping the things that God asked us to do… to be fruitful, to love one another (including future generations), to be in service to one another and so on
I won’t mince my words… what has happened, what we have allowed, what we continue to allow is a shame-filled disgrace. People refuse to limit their greed, they refuse to slow or stop their own desire for more. In our quest for more we move further and further away from His heart, from His ways and from His blessings.
Jesus said we do not need more than one thing, if we have two of something then to give the second one away – we actually do not need more stuff than we can use. Modesty.
