There is a wolf in amongst the sheep (Todd Bentley/Florida Outpouring)

If you are a regular reader of this blog you will have heard my commitment to never write about things I haven’t tried and tested myself first. I can’t remember once saying “God said XYZ”. You will know that I don’t teach until I have personally tried and tested and waited and prayed. You’ll also know I write long posts with all the details – so you are informed to make your own decision. This blog post is no different. I will set out some of my experiences and some scripture and some historic facts about past revivals. By the end you’ll know some of what I think – that is unavoidable – but I really want you give you some scripture so you can make up your own mind.

I have had two nights of intense and wonderful intimacy with God. As I walked up to where I am to write this I literally felt the Holy Spirit reach out and open my mouth. If I needed a clear command to speak, that was it. Plus, as I write this I feel His heat on me. I write this at the risk of being accused of not submitting to church authority, of not being in unity with the church, and of whatever else… but here goes…

God said to me a while back “What good is a watchman who won’t speak out”. For a week since I learned about the Florida Outpouring I have been wondering, praying, seeking Him, I have been deliberately doubting myself, trying to have the highest standards of fairness, constantly saying to myself that His ways are higher etc.

Today I felt God pushing me to say clearly to the church, to anyone listening, “there is a wolf in amongst the sheep”. The urgency is there. We really must acknowledge this. Shepherds must quickly grow up and take their place to protect the sheep. By their nature the sheep are innocent and vulnerable.

Shepherds, use your discernment, study scripture, stay on the Rock with your roots firmly embedded in Him so you can be safe as the water passes through.

What is my experience on this?

  • I first encountered Todd Bentley at the Open Heavens Conference 2004 in Melbourne. I saw and felt the spirit that moved over the people. It was witchcraft. But I remember my pastor saying this was the strongest he had felt the Holy Spirit since Toronto first moved. I just kept quiet. Church submission. Church unity. Etc.
  • I have previously bought and used a CTF Home Soaking Kit. I saw the spirit as it came to the people that I invited to come to the soaking sessions. It was witchcraft. I saw my friends struggle in their lives after that. I stopped and got it all out of my house. One friend recovered after prayer. Two others haven’t recovered yet.
  • I have gone to Sydney to hear John and Carol Arnott speak and I saw the move of the “spirit” that comes with them. I saw the daughter of a friend “drinking” the spirit in. This person was in a desperate state before that and endless exposure to this “spirit” has not improved their situation. It is a witchcraft spirit that is being spread – plain and simple. John Arnott radiates a feeling of love and caring, that is undeniable. But the spirit they are spreading – knowingly or unknowingly – is witchcraft.
  • I attended a local church event promoting “250 scriptures” about doors into the heavenly realm and they prophet was saying we must go into the spirit realm and “fetch” the power and bring it back here and use it. This is simply not at all biblical.

In the last year I have had much more exposure to spiritualism and I am more familiar with the problem and the solution. See my writings below…

Visions and warnings

  • Years ago I had a vision about Toronto. I saw the building fall over. Then I saw a bigger, brighter, whiter building rise up in its place. Toronto 1.0 has become Florida Outpouring 2.0
  • Also years ago I felt that a revival was coming in which the church will absorb many occult people and the church will not be able to discern them apart and they will tear at the fabric of our faith by enoucraging us to be syncretistic, without us even knowing it.
  • The most significant change is that instead of spreading an easily-to-identify witchcraft spirit (identifyable to anyone with discernment of spirits) what is spreading now is spiritualism – and it is the most amazing counterfeit to the Holy Spirit I have ever seen.

Spiritualism

When I first encountered spiritualism last year I was so confused, because the person I was talking to was using it on me and I felt heavy, warm, I felt the healing power, I was being healed… it felt like God… but the person wasn’t a Christian.

The person believed Jesus was God, but on investigation the person was not at all a Christian. The person’s white light poured and poured and poured onto me and all the normal discernment feelings that I get with witchcraft (itchy skin, stabbing pains in the hand) didn’t happen. I sat there for hours wondering what this was as it poured on me.

It took 1.5 days of prayer to get it all off me. The white light, the healing, the warmth… it was so confusing.

Pleased understand this: the person was not at all a Christian and yet she had so many gifts. I felt God speaking to me about it afterwards and I wrote down my tears, because I knew that the church is (at most times) utterly innocent to anything spiritual. But this spiritualism was so convincing, so powerful… I literally had tears and cries to God for the church. My heart ached for the church and its sheer naivete. I felt it had absolutely no chance against this incredibly good counterfeit.

What good is a watchman that won’t speak out?

Since then I have had many visions and felt many warnings. But I couldn’t understand the problem, so I didn’t speak out. With no visible enemy, what could I relate the warnings to? So I just kept blogging about the need for righteousness. I wrote statements like “the robe of righteousness is THE essential fashion requirement for this year”.

It was during all these warnings that God said to me “What good is a watchman who won’t speak out”. It was a shock, but still I didn’t know what to say, I still couldn’t put the picture together. I am expecting a revival, but a long 100-year revival that fulfills written scripture and brings about 1000 years of peace under entirely new spiritual conditions.

Todd and the Outpouring

So one day I heard about TB and the FO. It is in my nature – everyone will tell you – to assume the best in everything. This morning I was told by a relative stranger (a person on the bus who I had met 1 time before) that I am so trusting that I am in fact gullible. Ker-pow. Ouch. But true. And I am proud that I turn the other cheek and give the shirt and try to trust in all situations. (I enforce boundaries on an incremental scale, bit by bit if the person won’t repent and change their harmful ways.)

So – by my nature – I assumed that Todd Bentley had changed and had healed from when I last saw him in person in 2004. Hey, if God can heal me from my past, then He can heal anyone! And also, God can work through anyone He wants to, can’t He? His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. We know that.

But. I watched a few shows online on God.tv. No. Nothing had changed. I know and have met some of the people this is moving through. IMO the darkness surrounding them is quite astonishing. I checked my discernment with other people I know to be clean and to have excellent discernment, they agreed. I waited. I prayed. I doubted. I doubted more.

Then the dead began to rise – which I actually predicted would happen in an email to a friend. The time for speaking out is now, not later when people needed someone to take a stand and point to Jesus Christ and to the scriptures and to say “STAND!“, when you have done all you can, then you “STAND!

So let me end this post by asking you (the reader) some questions and pointing to some scriptures.

A challenge to you… how do you know?

How do you know this isnt the false prophet of Matt 24:24 who does wonders and EVEN calls down (spiritual) fire from Heaven.

For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to deceive and lead astray, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones). – Matt 24:24

He performs great signs (startling miracles), even making fire fall from the sky to the earth in men’s sight. – Rev 13:13

Please listen, I am NOT saying Todd is THAT person. Let me say it again. I am NOT condemning Todd, but I AM saying he is wrong IMO. In a democracy I can do that. Woohoo! I can publically disagree with someone. I am not saying he is THE false prophet. But I am warning you to not get involved and to stay well clear of this spirit. Don’t go to an impartation service.

So what AM I saying? I am asking you and challenging you to engage your intellect. Think it through for yourself. What should you be looking for in an authentic revival? Again please let me challenge you to begin thinking and studying the scriptures.

Here is something else to think about. How do you know that when this gets to heaven God won’t say “get away from Me, I never knew you” and they had been doing *wonderous* works!

Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name? And then I will say to them openly (publicly), I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands]. – Matt 7:22-23

Look, they did wonderful signs IN HIS NAME, they had power over evil – and He never knew them.

For a third and final time, let me say it absolutely clearly: I am NOT saying Todd is a sign of the end times. Let’s not freak out and lose our mental capacity. But I AM saying that this is not of God IMO. And I am allowed to have opinions – just as you are too.

What are the signs of a revival?

I challenge you to decide for yourself. I have the right to make my own mind up. You have the right to make yours up. I have the right to think I am right. You too. I can think you’re wrong, you can think I am wrong. It’s ok. We can disagree. Lets enjoy this aspect of democracy. Let’s not fight. Let’s just hold differing opinions.

Some people say the sign of a revival is that it is transferrable. Really? Is that the sign? I say history shows the signs are deep repentance and anguish over sin, plus a change of heart to the extent in 1904 where donkeys have to be retrained because no one is swearing, and pubs close and prostitutes go get day jobs. Why? Because people stop sinning – it’s a change of heart.

Todd barely uses the word Jesus but mainly focusses on the “Father”. In 2004 at the Open Heavens Conference he had been healing people for 20 minutes before he said “Oh by the way, its not me doing these things, it’s the Holy Spirit” and then he made no further mention of Jesus or the Holy Spirit AT ALL in his sessions. One nod to the Holy Spirit and then it was all about him and the anointings he has collected over the years from various people.

In the Outpouring I haven’t seen him speak about the cross and sin and repentance and changing our ways. Have you? I don’t (yet) hear about any inner change in people spontaneously abandoning their inner sinful nature. He hands out “anointing” to anyone who touches their screen. Think about it, there is NO repentance needed at all to receive this anointing. Is God really doing *such* a new thing that the cross is no longer needed?

Everything in our fath circles (1) sin and (2) our need for release from that sin and (3) our resulting reunited status with God through the cross. Only THEN we can reign as kings (or princes). No revival or new wineskin (not that I have read about or seen a DVD about) has been separated from the issue of sin and repentance.

Coming to the Father and the River for life

Jesus said the way to the Father is through Jesus Christ. He said that if we climb over the walls and don’t go via the narrow door (His body) then we are illegitimate.

Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and spacious and broad is the way that leads away to destruction, and many are those who are entering through it. But the gate is narrow (contracted by pressure) and the way is straitened and compressed that leads away to life, and few are those who find it.

Beware of false prophets, who come to you dressed as sheep, but inside they are devouring wolves. – Matt 7:13-15

Or listen to this scripture

ASSURE you, most solemnly I tell you, he who does not enter by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way (elsewhere, from some other quarter) is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. – John 10:1-2

Or this one

So Jesus said again, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that I Myself am the Door for the sheep. All others who came [as such] before Me are thieves and robbers, but the [true] sheep did not listen to and obey them. – John 10:7-8

Yes Todd is raising the dead and it’s shocking and impressive, but he is not doing it through the Door, through the Shepherd. This is an illegitimate movement – thieves and robbers. They climbed some other way. Don’t go with them. Stay on the Rock.

It is just simply not possible to come to the “Father” which they teach about, in any other way than by the cross of Jesus.

Toronto spoke frequently about the river, but Revelations says clearly that ONLY those who have washed their robes – made them white – in the blood (sacrifice for sin) of Jesus Christ can drink from that river. But I don’t remember Toronto dealing with the issue of sin and repentance and forgiveness and the need for a perfect Lamb of God.

Build on the Rock – Jesus Christ

So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts upon them [obeying them] will be like a sensible (prudent, practical, wise) man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a stupid (foolish) man who built his house upon the sand. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell–and great and complete was the fall of it. – Matt 7:24-27

The Rock that Jesus Christ is referring to is the sure knowledge that sin is what separates us from God and repentance (admitting our sin, feeling deep sadness at it, and changing our ways) is the way we are re-united to God. Todd hands out “anointing” to anyone who touches their screen. Where is the issue of sin, repentance, the cross, the Lamb as a payment for sins?

This “move of God” is the water Jesus was warning us of. It is NOW washing away people from their faith. Feel free to call me “super spiritual”, but the bible defines our faith. It is not the experience of supernatural events or the fact that it is transferrable which should convince you… it should be a deep abiding knowledge of your Saviour and the Rock on which your faith is planted. As you hold to that Rock, you remain safe.

I dare you to think about your faith

What Todd Bentley is promoting is called spiritualism. Read about it a bit. Think about the white light. The heavy pressure. The wave that comes. Is it God? Everything in our fath circles (1) sin and (2) our need for release from that sin and (3) our resulting reunited status with God through the cross. Only THEN we can reign as kings (or princes). No revival or new wineskin (not that I have read about or seen a DVD
about) has been separated from the issue of sin and repentance.

A new wineskin?

Is this the Holy Spirit and would the Holy Spirit teach something so new and so disconnected to Jesus Christ? Let’s see…

But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you. – John 14:26

The Holy Spirit will – according to that scripture – behave and teach the same things as Jesus Christ did. That is why the Apostles taught what they taught.

A new thing beyond Jesus Christ?

No new wineskin can be seaparated as a new thing, but each new wineskin is a deeper revelation of Jesus Christ. The bible says that ALL prophecy is a prophecy about Jesus Christ.

I am [only] another servant with you and your brethren who have [accepted and hold] the testimony borne by Jesus. Worship God! For the substance (essence) of the truth revealed by Jesus is the spirit of all prophecy [the vital breath, the inspiration of all inspired preaching and interpretation of the divine will and purpose, including both mine and yours]. – Rev 19:10

Friends, it is ALWAYS about Jesus Christ. It has to be. Always. Every time. All of history is about our marriage to Jesus Christ, His defeat of sin and death and THEN He reunites us to the Father. No one else can do this.

Every move of God in the OT pointed to Jesus Christ. Every move in the NT and in all of AD points to Jesus Christ.

If this move is not centered on Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world – and it isn’t – then it needs to find it’s own name, because it is a different religion.

If it is not Christianity and it’s healing people and raising the dead – then you must pause and ask where it is getting it’s power from. Knowingly or unknowingly what Todd Bentley is promoting is called spiritualism IMO.

Water, Rock and Shepherding

I believe this wave of water (Matt 7:24-27) will wash away all who are not firmly and decisively planted on the Rock of Jesus Christ. Your foundation must be firm. If you have that firm foundation, you are a shepherd, so go shepherd the sheep before they are washed away!

PLEASE NOTE: I respect your right to disagree with me. I respect your right to be right when I am wrong. Please respect my right to have my own opinion. I have a right to decide for myself based on my understanding of Christianity and based on my relationship with God – as I understand Him to be and as I believe He has revealed Himself to me. We live in a democracy and you have the same rights as me. And I have the same rights as you – to say what I think. I tolerate your right to believe things I disagree with, please tolerate my right to believe what you may disagree with. That’s democracy folks. We all get to make up our own mind and speak out what we think.

NOTE 2:

I strongly recommend this post: The Toronto Blessing… or curse?

  1. As heartbreaking as the sin of adultery is, in a way it was a good thing that people found out about Bentley, and he was removed from television. What I want to know is this – if all these people were brought back from the dead, then where are they? No interviews on the 700 club? No articles in Christianity Today? No appearances on Larry King or Oprah? Sure, some would want to remain anonymous, but surely some would want to bring glory to God by presenting their amazing testimonies. Bring the doctor, the mortician, etc.bring the death cetificate…why the silence?

    Hi Alease

    Yes the silence is deafening.

And yes adultery is a sin, but absolutely every one of us has sinned in our heart or through his or her eyes – and all sin is equal in God’s eyes (even although the iniquity can vary a lot). So there is no way that any one of us can throw the first stone at Todd without stoning ourselves.

I know that it’s not over for Todd. I’m keen to see God using Todd.

    God bless,
    Mark.

  2. about his imperfect theology: to name one (and it isn’t even that big of a mistake) he says in one of his songs “oh God, I hear you knockin’… I open my heart… I wanna dine… I wanna dine with the King” when that reference only applies to backsliding christians in Laodicea. He was saying for them to repent and He would enter again, but this is not the case for Todd Bentley; God is not knocking in his heart; God is enthroned there, but God allows imperfections, as long as they’re done in faith, because you will definitely learn from them when you learn you were wrong – like when Todd got burned out and went through that dark night of the soul thing. lol God bless ttyl!

    Hi Daniel

I am sad that Todd fell, but I always think that you or I could so easily fall and keep on falling and never get up. I am excited about the potential in Todd’s life and what God could be planning to do in and through Todd.

    God bless!
    Mark.

  3. Hello,
What I discern when I see Todd Bentley is a man who is in love with Jesus, whose theology is more advanced than most peoples, though like everyone else’s having little imperfections here and there. As far as one of the people he has worked with in worship album, I definitely felt a “spirit of the world” on him “Kevin” something when I first heard his voice, and I kept it to myself. Later I was with small group Bible study and I said something about the guy, and it so happened the host of the Bible study had known the musician (Kevin Prosch) and I said I totally discerned that he was in the world, and had no business singing for the Lord (at the time he made the record).

Actually, Todd Bentley lives so much in the Spirit of Life that I have not found a single person with an anointed word to release me from bondage the way the word God’s given him at times – and I go to El Rey Jesus in Miami, FL, the largest hispanic church in the USA and, believe me, they have an anointing, and they love Jesus… but they just don’t have what Todd Bentley has at all. Maybe it is because I receive better from people when they’re not standing right in front of me…?

As far as going with your gut, I commend you – whatever is not of faith is sin; however, the anointing on him is real, I can tell you. I don’t believe every word he speaks “unqualifiably”, but no one is called to do that- “the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets”. “Try all things – keep that which is good” “…test the spirits…” I love Todd Bentley, but he still has flesh, and with that flesh, he is capable of erring; therefore, as much as I trust the move of God on his life, and everything God is doing through him, I remember that he is just a man, and the word of truth is the final authority, just as it is in his own life.

I am no one; I was reading your other posts, and enjoying them, and to be honest, I have no right to speak, since I am a man of too many words and too little action, but I’m just giving my two cause I saw Todd being talked about, and to be honest, he is one of the very few people I truly respect and love in the Lord, and I wanted to kind of defend what he is doing, because it is beautiful. If you still think it’s witchcraft, then, if you feel that the Lord will allow you, pray that the veil of flesh will be lifted from Todd and that he would walk in the spirit of discernment, because think of how many people he is leading, you want God to use him in a truthful way:
#1 Think of how many people in the world are NOT working for the Lord – who don’t even care about the Lord.
#2 Think of how many people who are working for the Lord never do anything for the Lord.
#3 Think of how many people who do things for the Lord never do it on the scale he has.
#4 Think of his character: I dare you to look at him and discern whether he loves the Lord or not. You will feel it and discern it.

    God bless you, brother.

    Hi Daniel

Thanks for visiting and for leaving a comment. It’s going to be exciting to see what Todd is being prepared for, in the future. God can use him.

    God bless,
    Mark.

  4. Thank you Mark. I am unfamiliar with the references to Todd Bentley; however the fundamental message of your writing touched me. “How do you know” is a question for which I seek continuous wisdom. It is through continual affirmation of the related scriptures (such as your writing) that I find peace.

I am further grateful to live in a country where I can see an exchange of ideas and opinions in a loving way. God bless to you and those who so respectfully commented.

    Hi Anna.

It truly IS wonderful that we can all share our opinions and disagree. We need to defend that right, not only for ourselves, but for other people as well. To deny other religions the right to have their view is to deny them what God doesn’t even deny them.

God permits freedom of choice. He makes it clear WHAT our choice SHOULD be (and I agree with Him) but He still permits free choice – that’s why angels could rebel against Him… they are permitted free will. Even efter this world is ended there is no indication in the bible that free will is removed.

So we must permit – within the boundaries of safety – the free will, free choice and the right to have views that are different to ours… even if we very strongly disagree with those views.

    God bless you! Mark.

  5. While I don’t necessarily agree with all of your conclusions, this is one of the more fairly written articles out here.

I have studied Todd Bentley in deep detail and respectfully disagree with your assertion that he does not point to Jesus – I will, however, agree that he has not done it often enough.

I have sat in many smaller meetings with TB listening intently with my eyes on scripture, I don’t remember him EVER pointing anyone to God other than through Jesus.

Your points on spiritualism are well made, however lacking definition. Is there not such a thing as “godly” spiritualism? If so, what does it look like?

On the people who received impartation and didn’t really change, isn’t it always incumbent upon the vessel to decide to become one of higher purpose or not, rather than an “impartation” of anything?

Anyways, thank you for trying to take a balanced approach, I look forward to more discourse via email?

Hi Mark. Thanks for your supportive comment. Yes we can chat via email if you want. MarkRobertWilson@gmail.com To answer your question: is there such a thing as Godly spiritualism. This proves my point exactly. If your faith was entirely based on the Rock – His perfect life, His atoning death, His resurrection – then you would know that nothing comes to us EXCEPT through those things. So, no… there is no Godly spirutualism. We can have ANYTHING He had, but He had to have it first. If He didn’t have it, we shouldn’t want it. We are made into His image, not the image of something that comes after Him. There is nothing after Him. God bless, Mark.

  6. You are speaking truth, Jesus should be the focus of all.

Thankfully the speakers in the FO have made it clear that He (Christ) is their focus, that sin seperates us from God and that only Jesus’ sacrifice can reconcile us with Him.

When I feel worship rising in me in reaction to the broadcasted healing testimonies I give thanks to Jesus.

I have prayed for guidance and discernment. Either God is powerless to show me the truth (and he is not, amen?) or Jesus is in the revival.

Thank you for your sincere earnestness in this.

May God bess you and us all Michael-Israel.
