Isaiah 28 – for a time such as this

So often I come across (very healthy and intelligent, not psychotic at all) people who are anointed Christians and they feel like they are being attacked. They tithe, they donate to charity, they help, they are growing small ministries – or are trying to – and they tell stories of being held down as they sleep, their marriage or business is failing, nothing they do seems to help them or stop the problem.

This post is for those people. To those people this post is an incredible lifeline. For everyone else, may God bless you, move along, nothing to see here! 🙂

When I show these verses to people, they ask why they struggle to read it or why they can’t find any existing information about it. To them I show these verses:

And the vision of all this has become for you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, Read this, I pray you, he says, I cannot, for it is sealed. And when the book is given to him who is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray you, he says, I cannot read. – Is 29:11-12

These verses have been kept for a time such as this. Those words “a time such as this” keep sticking in my mind.

The verses

NOTE: In this Isaiah scripiture a certain “rock” is described as a foundation which is solid to build on. That rock is also described as One who can destroy covenants with death and agreements with sheol (the place of the dead) and remove lies and falsehoods. Jesus is confirmed as this Rock in Rom 9:33 and Matt 7:24

Welcome to Isaiah 28:14-22 (Amplified Bible) these verses have four sections to it:

  1. v14 explains who these words are for – the bad people who rule over His children
  2. v15 explains the problem – “because” – that the people have a covenant with death that means that they can call up evil and death and it won’t attack them, it does their will.
  3. v16-17 explains the solution – “therefore” – the cross of Jesus Christ overcomes sin, death and sheol
  4. v18-20 explain the result – their covenant with death is canceled and now when they bring up death to do their bidding, with no protection, it turns on them. Believers in Jesus Christ are protected.

Lets get started on the verses themselves…

14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem!

15 Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol (the place of the dead) we have an agreement–when the overflowing scourge passes through, it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter.

In this next paragraph notice 3 words: Cornerstone, Rock and waters. In these verses Isaiah promises a Cornerstone (this is Jesus Christ, see 1 Peter 2:4-10) and the Rock (Jesus calls Himself this in Matt 7:24-27) and warns that those not on the sure foundation of the Rock will be washed away by waters (Jesus says the same in Matt 7:24-27).

Also note that a measuring line/rod is a horizontal rod and the plumb line is vertical – that makes a cross! – and that is another sign that these scriptures are pointing to Jesus Christ.

16 Therefore thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am laying in Zion for a foundation a Stone [Jesus Christ], a tested Stone [Jesus Christ], a precious Cornerstone [Jesus Christ] of sure foundation; he who believes (trusts in, relies on, and adheres to that Stone) will not be ashamed or give way or hasten away [in sudden panic].

When you can see that these verses clearly point to Jesus Christ, you are ready continue and take a stand.

Canceling their covenant, removing their shelter

In the next verse it is necessary to really take a stand and emphasize the truth. You need to really say “YOUR!” covenant is annulled. “YOUR!” agreement does not stand. Isaiah wrote this 500 years before Christ, so this was in the future to Isaiah. But to us it is history. Their covenant *IS* annulled on the cross. Not will be, it already is. Already. Done. Over.

Also please note – this is terribly important – we are not creating a scourge of our own, because that would be what I call “Christian witchcraft”. We are simply saying their scourge turns back to them. (We hope they will stop creating them!).

When speaking these words you need to be very assertive and forceful. Stick out your index finger. Say it like you mean it. These words start in v17…

I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plummet; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the hiding place (the shelter).

18 And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol (the place of the dead) shall not stand; when the overwhelming scourge [Mark: the scourge that YOU create] passes through, then you will be trodden down by it [Mark: by your own scourge]. 19 As often as it passes through, it [the enemy’s scourge] will take you; for morning by morning will it pass through, by day and by night.

Doing bad things with no shelter is no fun

And it will be utter terror merely to hear and comprehend the report and the message of it [but only hard treatment and dispersion will make you understand God’s instruction].

20 For [they will find that] the bed is too short for a man to stretch himself on and the covering too narrow for him to wrap himself in. [All their sources of confidence will fail them.]

21 For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim, He will be wrathful as in the Valley of Gibeon, that He may do His work, His strange work, and bring to pass His act, His strange act.

I think it’s wonderful that the cross of Jesus Christ is central to this prophecy. I also think it’s wonderful that God ends the prophecy with an admission – this feels to us like a “strange” work and a strange act. It sure does.

Good advice

God has good advice for the bad people trying to rule His children… don’t!

22 Now therefore do not be scoffers, lest the bands which bind you be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord God of hosts upon the whole land and the whole earth.

Yes this is a strange work and a strange act. But God is God and He is teaching us how to overcome. Would you like to read the incredible promises that come to anyone who learns how to overcome as Jesus Himself did: To he who overcomes – from the book of Revelations.

The result is your freedom!

This is the promise made for those who take their stand on this prophecy. Take note of the words thunder and the tempest – that is like a storm of rain.

Isaiah 29:5-7 (Amplified Bible)

5 But the multitude of your [enemy] strangers that assail you shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the ruthless and terrible ones like chaff that blows away.

And in an instant, suddenly, 6 You shall be visited and delivered by the Lord of hosts with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a devouring fire. 7 And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel [Jerusalem], even all that fight against her and her stronghold and that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night.

As I wrote at the top, if you are not struggling in a spiritual battle, this post won’t make sense to you.

If this was written for you and if you know within yourself that you have been prepared by God for this post, DO NOT leave a comment on this post and simply read this post and read the original IN THE AMPLIFIED BIBLE and when you see the centrality of the cross of Jesus Christ – then you are ready to take a stand against those scoffers who rule you – and then speak assertively to them. You probably don’t know them. Who cares anyway? You don’t need to know.

Speak forcefully!

The word of the Lord is a sword. What do you do with swords? You swing with them, you use them. You have one. Use it! It really is YOUR job. Take a look:

Behold, I will make you to be a new, sharp, threshing instrument which has teeth; you shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, and shall make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the tempest or whirlwind shall scatter them. And you shall rejoice in the Lord, you shall glory in the Holy One of Israel. – Is 41:15-16

Who? You! Who me? Yes you! Surely it’s someone else. No, it’s you. Uhhh…. Yes you!! It’s the people who rebuild the walls in the book of Nehemiah (see: How Nehemiah’s city recovered).

One last verse to remind you that it is by our spoken testimony that we overcome – meaning tht you have to get the words and speak it out:

And they have overcome (conquered) him by means of the blood of the Lamb and by the utterance of their testimonyRev 12:11

So I recommend you get an Amplified Bible and read and read and read every day these verses. Speak them out forcefully. Be determined. Push that stuff out of your life, inch by inch. It works.

Remember my promise to only teach you what I have learned, tried for myself, found that it works. In this instance I have shared it with many other people and it works for them too – and very quickly too.
