Glean times call for desperate measures

What does it say about the condition of the world when the richest country in the world has a situation like this: 40,000 clog back roads to glean/harvest free vegetables at Colorado family farm

(What is gleaning?) How did this happen that 40,000 people were desperate enough to do this??

I have an opinion on how this happened. I think that the grand experiment of “let the market decide” was given a try and found to be wanting.

Trickle-down economics” and “trickle-down theory” are terms of political rhetoric that refer to the policy of providing tax cuts or other benefits to businesses and rich individuals, in the belief that this will indirectly benefit the broad population. The term has been attributed to humorist Will Rogers, who said during the Great Depression that “money was all appropriated for the top in hopes that it would trickle down to the needy.” – Source: Wikipedia

While the “trickle down economics” theory was experimented with, real lives were destroyed. While George Bush went on month-long holidays, real people waited for the trickle-down that never came. And the world followed suit, going hands off, refusing to regulate extreme capitalists.

Obama says it best in this interview:

BARBARA WALTERS: How did you feel when you read about the three heads of the auto companies taking private planes to Washington?
BARACK OBAMA: Well, I thought maybe they’re a little tone deaf to what’s happening in America right now. And this has been a chronic problem, not just for the auto industry, I mean, we’re sort of focused on them. But I think it’s been a problem for the captains of industry generally. When people are pulling down hundred million dollar bonuses on Wall Street, and taking enormous risks with other people’s money, that indicates a sense that you don’t have any perspective on what’s happening to ordinary Americans.

Why am I speaking out like this? Are you asking that question? The reason is that we live in a democracy. Praise God. And in a democracy the leaders need support. If their support % drops to 40%, they may not go through with the promises that were made when their support% was up in the 70% range. So we have to keep speaking up if we want to see Obama (and Kevin Rudd) make the changes that God put them there for!

Indeed, this is the central oppotunity and problem falling interest and support – and the solution is that the people raise the temperature and keep it raised. To slack off now is to remove the overwhelming support that exists for real change. Don’t go to sleep, keep your hands on the wheel. Keep demanding righteous behaviour, keep demanding change, keep demanding justice for all.

Remember the creed: For the people, by the people. It’s not for the companies by the companies.

I also like this quote: “The root problem runs deeper than excessive personal debt. The problem lies in a value system that measures our human worth according to our net worth.” – Source: Is the Crisis Your Fault?

So how do we keep the temperature up until real change has occured? One thing we can do is not ignore and whitewash illegal behaviour, because then you are sending a thumbs up to the next group and the next.

What can I say, but please pray for our leaders (here is a sample prayer) and remember that being a good citizen doesn’t mean being mute and obedient. You cannot be judged by what you say or by the number of Naomi Klein books you read… it’s about what you hope for, do you wish for peace? Do we pray for our leaders? Do we love one another and invest into the country and the world we live in?

In Australia democracy is not seen as a right, but a responsibility. Here people are expected to participate. And that is a wonderful thing about this great country.

But… whatever we decide to do, or not, let me raise your temperature about what God is doing in this world…

For the first time since the government began compiling records, the rate of cancer has begun to decline, marking a tipping point in the fight against the second-leading cause of death among Americans.

Researchers already knew that the number of cancer deaths was declining as the result of better treatment, but the drop in incidence indicates that major progress is also being made in prevention.

I understand that the authorities are connecting lung cancer prevention to the lowered rate of smoking, but I fail to see how breast, colon and rectal cancer, prostate and others are connected to smoking? 🙂

And get this! It is especially amazing to see those stats drop in the light of this quote: “Baby boomers are reaching the age at which they develop cancer … ” So just as they are due to develop it, the cancer rate drop right across the board. Wow! Even more remarkably in that report I see this quote: “The overall death rate declined by an average of 1.8% per year over the same period.

Truly we are witnessing the end to sin and death. I’ve said it before, let me say it again: we are coming into a time of significant change. You may ask how it is possible and let me point you to a starting point in the bible: Sin as a noun in Romans.

Here are some other posts you may want to read which somewhat describe this time of change…

And don’t forget your role in this… is to actively love someone in need…
