Lake and river update

I’ve had to do a lot of investigating about what is and isn’t happening to Lake Eyre. It actually doesn’t seem like the floods have arrived there yet, despite the various images of it having water in it which are spread around all over the place. Like this one which shows it as full… view the full image to see the whole of the lake in blue. Virtual Earth and Yahoo Maps also show Lake Eyre as having heaps of water in it. So it’s quite confusing.

I also encountered these weird X’s below) as I was looking in Google Earth. They made me feel just slightly paranoid. hehehe. 🙂

But anyway… life goes on… and everything points to the waters arriving mid-Feb 2009 (2 weeks or less). Here are three flood advisories… the first (1) is probably the most up to date:

  1. AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT – BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY SOUTH AUSTRALIA REGIONAL OFFICE FLOOD ADVICE FOR INLAND RIVERS
  2. FLOOD WARNING FOR THE DIAMANTINA RIVER
  3. FLOOD WARNING FOR THE GEORGINA RIVER AND EYRE CREEK
  4. SA Warnings – duplicate of above

And here is an excellent lake status page and I have taken a snap of the page (just in case) and in it you can see where the flooding is up to and what part is now damp and what is still dry. A very cool image. I added a red arrow to show the direction of the water. Well done to the guys at the “Lake Eyre Yacht Club”! A yacht club on a lake that never fills up? Now that’s optimism!! 🙂

I have compiled a nice set of images from Google Maps showing the vast volume of water which is approaching Lake Eyre.

And if all this wasn’t enough, check out these great pics of the waters approaching.

I’m doing this largely for myself, as a memorial to this point in time in my life, so I can look back on it later. We are in momentous times, believe me.
