Let us never forget the Ephesians says that the the wisdom of God (shown through Jesus Christ) is to be shown to the rulers and authorities in Heavenly places…
[The purpose is] that through the church the complicated, many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects might now be made known to the angelic rulers and authorities (principalities and powers) in the heavenly sphere. – Eph 3:8-10
It is through you and me that the finished work of Jesus Christ is to be shown to the rulers and authorities in Heavenly places. To who? Yeah… you heard right 🙂
Through who? Yup. Through you and me. Wow. Imagine that. We go from being enslaved by sin and death, helpless to help ourselves, to being the chosen vessels who get to demonstrate God’s wisdom and might to the ones who were involved in the rebellion.
Now before the faith came, we were perpetually guarded under the Law, kept in custody in preparation for the faith that was destined to be revealed (unveiled, disclosed), – Gal 3:23
What a turn around! The sad helpless captives are released by Jesus Christ and they become His chosen vessels of honor. And the evil captors who trapped us, they become captive to Jesus Christ. No wonder He said that He led the captivity captive.
Therefore it is said, When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive [He led a train ofvanquished foes] and He bestowed gifts on men. – Eph 4:8
He has done this and it is through His church – the fullness of Himself – that He intends to demonstrate what He has done to those who began the rebellion in Heaven. Showing God’s wisdom and might to the Heavenly rulers and authorities is the same message as “we do not war against flesh and blood”…
For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere. – Eph 6:12
It’s also the reason why Jesus Christ taught us to bind and loose what has already been bound and loosed in Heaven….
Mat 16:19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in Heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven
We believers in the church, the ones who are helpless to help ourselves, are God’s chosen vehicles to demonstrate His might and wisdom to the Heavenly rulers and authorities. It happens through us. We get to bind and loose and it’s through the our use of the sword, which is scripture, that is comes to pass…
the sword that the Spirit wields, which is the Word of God. – Eph 6:17
Did you notice how in Eph 6:12 it says who we fight against, and in Eph 6:17 it says how we fight. It’s the same as how Jesus Christ fought… He said “it is written”.
What a great priveledge we have been extended! But I think it’s vital to understand that the bible sees human beings as captives, we don’t fight against flesh and blood. As someone said in church recently, “the person bothering me is not my enemy, the enemy is my enemy”. When we fight with rulers and authorities, we must be disciplined to fight with the words of scripture, with our faith. Jesus said, “apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5) and that is so true.
And to top it all off, all of this was foreseen and we were chosen for this role before the foundation of the world…
Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. – Eph 1:4
That gives me such a peace and sense of security, because nothing can go wrong. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He wrote my name in His book before this world began. He knows how it ends, even before the beginning began. There is only one other statement about Him which gives me greater confidence. It’s when He says about Himself that He is Who He is and He is unchanging. That means that He will not change His mind about His plans for this world.
I take comfort from this because the end that He has seen for us, that is the end that He will stick with and ensure it comes to pass. God has foreseen a good and wonderful end to this world in which we live with Him – if we choose Him – and He will not deviate from this plan.
