Know who you are – part 2

This post comes in two parts

Let’s say you are at an intersection and it’s a complete mess – it looks something like this

Let’s say that you care enough to want the mess to stop… you want the world to be a better place. So you march out into the middle and you stick out your hand just the way you have seen other people do in the movies.

Tell me… will all these people suddenly stop and form neat lines and listen to you? No, they won’t listen to you at all. Why should they? They don’t listen to each other and they are lawless.

What if you went home, got your legal documents from the govt (which appointed you a traffic cop a few years ago), and you got dressed into the official outfit, and got a loud speaker to make your voice heard over the traffic noise, and (very important) you put on the attitude of a law enforcement person (sort of like: “Im in charge here!”).

So what would happen now if you marched out into the mess and told them what to do? Yes… bit by bit… they would listen.

Making the enemy obey

When you want to pray for sickness to leave a person, first take a moment to PUT ON who you are IN Jesus Christ. Do you know who you are? Let me illustrate…

Before Melinda Gates became Mrs Bill Gates, she was a secretary at Microsoft. Did you know that? After she married Bill she became Mrs Bill Gates, or Mrs Melinda Gates. Now the largest foundaton in the world is called the “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation”. It’s not the Bill Gates Foundation. Why not? Because she and he have become one. She is now a very powerful woman on a global scale.

You and I are one with Jesus Christ… we are His bride… we are one with Him.

If she was meek then it wouldn’t matter how much power she had, because she would never use it and the world would not benefit in any way.

And that is sadly the case with you and me and almost everyone you and I know. We are married to Jesus Christ. He has named us. We have His Name and we are given the right to USE His Name to overcome sickness, death and all forms of death.

The enemy might not know you

But [one] evil spirit retorted, Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you? – Acts 19:15

but the enemy does know Jesus Christ.

Put on the new man

If you go out there in your own spiritual clothes you can’t impact anything. If you PUT OFF the old man and PUT ON the new man… the one dressed in Jesus Christ’s righteousness, the one armed with faith as a shield and the one who has a breastplate of righteousness… then things happen.

Think about the following two things when Jesus Christ met the enemy in spiritual war in the desert.

  1. This battle occurred after He was filled with the Holy Spirit, but before His public ministry began. I think that’s important to first be able to ACTUALLY beat the enemy, before we go an make disciples and try to show THEM how to beat the enemy.
  2. Jesus Christ quoted scripture to the enemy three times before He commanded the enemy away. He won the war using spiritual weapons, scripture, the sword of the Lord. And THEN He sent the enemy away.

Do you WANT the world to be a better place?

So let me wrap it up in this way… this world is a lot like that mayhem in the image above. Sickness is rampant. Death affects us all throughout our lives and then claims us at the end of it. There is no escape for most of us. Debt, divorce, isolation, pornography, war, violence, abuse, rape… it’s happening all around us.

And you… and me… we have been issued with the legal right to “tend the earth”. God said so!

So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth. – Gen 1:27-28

Identity is important

One last observation… the sermon on the mount is the first teaching that Jesus Christ gives to His disciples after He has chosen them and they begin to follow Him. What does He say to them? YOU – the disciples – are the light of the world. Right away He begins to give them identity.

Ok, one more… really last… observation. God repeatedly told the Israelites to tell their children about the miracles He did for them. Why? They must grow up with an identity that is tied to God. In order to stop the next generation backsliding, we must give the next generation an identity. If we don’t then popular culture will give them an identity.
