This post follows on from the previous post: Blood. Hyssop. Door. Pass over!
Lets look at the initial passage…
John 19:28 – Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Lets focus on these words “when he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”
It is clear that He drank what was offered to Him. After drinking it He said “It is finished”.
What was it He drank? Wine. Some translations call it “wine vinegar” or “sour wine”. Mark simply calls it “wine”. Apparently it was the cheap common Roman wine often drank by soldiers.
Whatever form of wine… cheap or not… it was a “product of the vine”. What did Jesus Christ say at the last supper?
Luke 22:17-18 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves, because I tell you, from now on I will never drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
Did He say He wouldnt drink “the product of the vine” until THE KINGDOM OF GOD COMES?
Did He then drink the product of the vine after the crucifixion and announce “it is finished!”
Then we can safely assume that the Kingdom of God is here, now, with us who believe. This is no small thing… its a very huge thing. I will share more about this – the Kingdom of God here amongst us – in a future post.
